Why is DJ as abreviation of disc jockey capitalized?

Is there a rule saying that abreviations are capitalized as opposed to the written out nouns they stand for?

First of all it is "Disco Jockey" not "Disc Jockey". It is a common practice using capitalized first alphabets of all such/similar/common words and terms.

I know that it is common practice, but I need to know whether there's a grammar rule to explain why it's DJ and not dj. Usually nouns are not capitalized and the two letters stand for a noun.... Who can help?
